Historical Background

Many years ago, the place was a vast plain of land with few houses, two roads and a few trees growing including the balite tree. All over the place was Cogon grasses. At that time, those grasses were useful to people because the leaves were used for roofing their houses. Once a Spaniard asked a native what the name of the place was.

The owner of the little hut whom the Spaniards asked of, did not understand the language. It seemed to him that he was asked of the name of the grasses as the stranger was also pointing to it, so the owner of the hut answered "Cogon."

The stranger was staying in the church now called Cathedral. He used to pass the place and he always mentioned the place Cogon. People coming in and out of the place were influenced by the stranger in naming the place, even the natives of the place called it Cogon.
