According to the reliable sources, the barangay got its name from the word “hampas” which means whip. Due to the very few settlements in the barangay t the time, the place was covered with trees and grasses. There were plenty of snakes in the place that one has to bring a long stick of hampas to drive away the snakes along the roadsides hence at present it is called “Dampas”.
In the olden days, the people of Dampas bury their deads by using bamboo webbed coffins called "pagpag" and later on they made communal coffins. Now, the "dayong", as mortuary of the Dampasanon folks, collect contribution and have a negotiation to funeral parlors.
Baseball was the first popular game that Dampas people used to play. They made improvised balls from clothes rounded and bounded with strings or "pisi". Later on, they learned to play volleyball using balls made of rattan. This was followed by basketball, which is the most popular game here.
Gambling was no exception to the old folks of Dampas. They had "buwang", "hantik", "pintik", and "kara kara".
The people of this place loved to sing the "balitaw" while the male loved to have "harana" especially during moonlit nights. Nowadays, the harana and the balitaw could no longer be heard except during programs on cultural revival. |
